Facts and Secrets..History of Matterhorn..
The ride was first imagined when Walt Disney was filming one of his movies in Switzerland,The Third Man on the Mountain. The real Matterhorn amazed him and made Walt want to make a 1/100 scale of the exact mountain with a bobsled ride in his newly opened Disneyland. The attraction opened in June 14, 1959 in Tomorrowland and built by coaster builder Arrow Dynamics and WED Imagineering. The ride was the first Steel tube roller coaster in the world, and the mountain was made of wood and steel infrastucture and coated by manmade rock. The Mountain was hoped to look as tall as possible so imagineers used forced perspective, planted tall trees at the bottom and small strees at the top making you feel "small." Waterfalls cascaded down its sides and frequently got riders wet. Inside was a large, open space through which the bobsleds traveled.
Unlike the real Matterhorn, this peak had numerous holes in its shell through which the riders sometimes exited and re-entered. The space within was not elaborately themed, with the infrastructure being only minimally disguised as rock. The Skyway passed through the center of the mountain, traveling through one pair of holes to Fantasyland and through another to Tomorrowland. Riders could see down into the Matterhorn's bowels as they glided through.
In the Early 1970's the ride officially became part of Fantasyland because of its place and its unfuturistic look for Tomorrowland. In 1978 the Matterhorn ride received a major refurbishment. The mountain's interior was remodeled getting its excess caves and holes filled in to hid the structure to make a more convicing theming. In addition they also added the Abominable Snowman, named Harold by the Imagineers.
