Matterhorn

Roar! Take a bobsled around and through the Matterhorn alpines....but beware of the Abominable Snowman!! <-- Rate this Ride!  Facts and Secrets  History -->
Climb aboard your bobsled as you take a ride through the Matterhorn mountains. Topped with snow and ice this attraction cannot be missed, sitting in the right side of Fantasyland its majestic peaks can be seen towering next to the Castle.

Race down in your sled down steep slopes, turning sharply by the cliffs, entering dark caves, and plummeting down in a "crystal" alpine pond.

Beware of the Abominable Snowman?

Who to take on this ride:
Teens will love this one! This ride isn't as scary as it looks, kids above 10 should do fine. If your younglings can ride this, try Space Mountain!

CoKo Ratings:

The ride in my opinion is really cool, and moderate in the thrills, The mountain itself is very amazing and well proped giving you the feel inside a ice cavern mountain with a Abominable Snowman lurking around the corners. The rate would probably differ a bit from which side you ride on.

The Fantasyland Side is slower but longer, and the Tomorrowland is bumpy and faster(shorter by about 10 sconds.) Walt Disney thought more small children would board from Fantasyland and teens from Tomorrowland, that's why they decided to seperate two tracks.

Facts and Secrets

  • At night if you approach the Matterhorn from Tommorland, one of the caves is glowing. If you are tall or high enough, look into the glowing cave. (The cave is glowing blue) you will see the Abominable Snowman!
  • The Matterhorn is a very unique ride for Disneyland Parks, because it is the only one
  • Matterhorn was the first steel tubed roller coaster that still exists and running in the world!
  • There is a basketball court on the very top of the mountain, but is now used as a storage facility.
  • The extinct ride Skyway used to move right through the Matterhorn mountain, now they sealed the humongous hole, but you can still see where it was.
  • The CMs (cast members) named the Abominable Snowman, Harold, which is also the name of the computer that runs the ride.
  • ..History of Matterhorn..

The ride was first imagined when Walt Disney was filming one of his movies in Switzerland,The Third Man on the Mountain. The real Matterhorn amazed him and made Walt want to make a 1/100 scale of the exact mountain with a bobsled ride in his newly opened Disneyland.

The attraction opened in June 14, 1959 in Tomorrowland and built by coaster builder Arrow Dynamics and WED Imagineering. The ride was the first Steel tube roller coaster in the world, and the mountain was made of wood and steel infrastucture and coated by manmade rock. The Mountain was hoped to look as tall as possible so imagineers used forced perspective, planted tall trees at the bottom and small strees at the top making you feel "small." Waterfalls cascaded down its sides and frequently got riders wet. Inside was a large, open space through which the bobsleds traveled.

Unlike the real Matterhorn, this peak had numerous holes in its shell through which the riders sometimes exited and re-entered. The space within was not elaborately themed, with the infrastructure being only minimally disguised as rock. The Skyway passed through the center of the mountain, traveling through one pair of holes to Fantasyland and through another to Tomorrowland. Riders could see down into the Matterhorn's bowels as they glided through.

In the Early 1970's the ride officially became part of Fantasyland because of its place and its unfuturistic look for Tomorrowland. In 1978 the Matterhorn ride received a major refurbishment. The mountain's interior was remodeled getting its excess caves and holes filled in to hid the structure to make a more convicing theming. In addition they also added the Abominable Snowman, named Harold by the Imagineers.
